Vintage Military Hungarian Theodolite Transit w Tripod, Cold War Era Military Collectible, Vintage Engineering Scientific Instrument
Vintage Hungarian (Hungary) Military Issued Theodolite Transit with Tripod and Case from the Cold War Era. This Theodolite is dated 1951 and came out a local estate here in Florida. Please scroll through all 10 photos to see this vintage scientific instrument from every angle. We tried to take close up views of everything important.,
This theodolite is VERY CLEAN for its age and all the lenses are free any fogging, cracks or damage. The leveling devices are under glass and all working (see photos). I know that theodolites/transits were used in the military for many purposes from everything to tracking ballistic scatterings to helping site locations for lands and building temporary structures.
I enlarged the text on the transit for you to see what I was working with. The booklet has the text Törzskönyv which translates in English to "Pedigree". The booklet is not an instruction booklet but looks like it was used for notes. There is a page or two of notes that I could not translate that I also enlarged. The theodolite has the number 41 and below what I think is a serial number of 014568 and a date of 1951. On the side it has the initials P.T.T.M. 6X which I'm presuming has something to do with the range. Where the two level arrows are behind glass there is a Hold and Release switch that locks into place and it is labeled "rögzÍt & kiold".
The transit itself measures 7" long by 4 3/4" wide by 4" deep and weighs 3.7 lbs (again this is the weight without the canvas bag and tripod). The canvas case which holds this piece has the same serial number stenciled on the top of the case. The transit tripod when folded measures 37 3/4" long. The tripod is made primarily of wood with metal ground spikes. It has a canvas strap that holds it together and a carrying strap.
I know there was a company called MOM in Hungary that made engineering instruments during this time. This piece does not bear their trademark. I am uncertain if they produced pieces for the military.
