c1940s stunning hand painted black lacquered wall plaques with iridescent mother of pearl inlay. This set of 4 Chinese import plaques shows gardens scenes of 4 long haired Oriental ladies. The Mother of Pearl is carved and smooth to touch. The hand painting is vivid and looks like a sunrise in the background. These will make a gorgeous grouping in any room or entry way.
Of note these are not the newer ones made in the last 25 year with raised pieces of MOP shell. These are OLD.
Each plaque measures 14 1/2" across and has a 1/2" depth. They are painted on wood and the back has a heavy paper board backing with a hanger attached for easy hanging.
The condition is Good. We note some tiny pieces of inlay missing in a few spots. Those of you that shop with us know that we try to note anything we see for accuracy. The inlay is tiny and it is not glaring and unless you are really looking for it, it will not be an issue. The lacquer is still shiny and thick almost everywhere - we note a few spots of wear on the side edge of some of them. Our camera picked up scratches on the macro mode again not see when hung or even held. These are old and the condition is incredible for their age. Lacquer pieces of this age generally do not look like this. See all photos to get an idea of the beauty and work that went into these. The mother of pearl was difficult to photograph it is iridescent and picks up many colors that we couldn't quite capture on camera.
