c1900 Folk Art Oil Painting Peaches in Basket in Mt Landscape Gilt Framed
c1900 Folk Art Oil on Canvas still life painting of peaches with a mountain landscape. This antique oil painting has an ornate gilt and gesso wood frame. The frame measures 24" by 19.5" with a nice deep depth of 2". There is a spot of gesso missing along the bottom edge of frame - see photos. This painting is from my personal collection. I have had for many years. I acquired from an estate in Upstate New York near Lowville. Now that I am at a coastal location this belongs where it can be hung and enjoyed.
We only did a wipe down of the frame as we did not want to chance removing any of the gilt or nice patina. The painting is stretched canvas tacked on a wood frame and measures 20" by 16". The colors are bright but you can see cracks in the paint noticeable mostly near the sky. This piece has a Levi Wells Prentice style but I feel it is a little more folky. There was a place I thought I saw a signature with a UV light but I can not be certain (see photos). The right and left corners are painted grass and dark so it is difficult to make much out.
There are some wonderful features in the painting; we love the still life against the mountain landscape. The peaches dare you to touch them and the greenery, sky and mountains are beautiful. The added touch of the butterfly and mums is appealing. This has been one of our favorite pieces for many years. Looking for a new hope to enjoy as much as we did.
