19th Century German Silver Tea Caddy Romantic Repousse Courting Scene Schleissner & Sons Hanau Marks
An exquisite piece of 19th Century German Silver by JD Schleissner & Sohne (and Sons). This antique tea caddy is highly decorative and crafted in 800 silver also known to some as German Silver. It has the most ornate repousse design of a courting scene in a cameo and a lovely curvy body. The repousse is identical on both sides of the caddy and even the lid gorgeous. Schleissner is known for their Rococo and Baroque Revival pieces which are becoming more difficult to find especially in this condition.
In addition to the courting scene you will find florals and vines, boughs of flowers, urns, musical instruments including a horn and tambourine. This piece is in Very Good estate condition with no dings, dents or other physical damage. We did a light hand polishing and left most of the patina on this beauty as it enhances the design. It will polish up nicely if you choose to do so.
This tea caddy stands 4 1/2" tall from top to bottom and measures 3 7/8" X 2 3/4" at the base. It is a remarkable piece. for it's age and we date between 1860-1880. The bottom is marked with the Schleissner & Sons pseudo Hanau marks. These pseudo marks were used to identify pieces that were revival pieces which depicted works from the 18th and 17th Centuries Hanau but made in the 19th Century. It has a 800 fineness mark for silver content and has been safely tested to be so.
