19th Century Enamel Gilt Buttons in 10k Gold Set of Eleven Roses
A rare and impressive set of 11 Victorian Era enamel and gilt buttons crafted of 10k yellow gold. This set is in it's original condition and from an estate out of New Hampshire and made their way down to Florida where we acquired them.
This set of buttons has a beautiful raised design of roses and boughs of florals. The light blue enameling is good with minimal wear for their age ie; some dark spots here and there but overall nice color. The roses were once pink and now mostly have gilt finish as does the edge of the buttons and the backs. When we acquired these I noticed gold (not gilt) on the edge of one of the buttons. I decided to take that button and do a hard scraping on the outside edge, past the gilt, to test the metal and low and behold....they are gold - 10k gold. You can hopefully see the edge of the one button I used to test in our photos and the results of our gold testing. These have the old style one piece eye with no foot to the shank.
We did not attempt to clean or polish. We only did a wipe down. These are as we found them. My guess is that these were on something extremely ornate possibly some kind of Victorian Coat. I would loosely date to sometime around 1850-1870.
Total weight is 40.9 grams.
