1870s Shell Cameo Brooch Large Scenic Carving Gold over Brass Needs Pin Hardware
A fantastic example of an early scenic carved shell cameo. The cameo setting measures 2" X 1 1/2" and is gold over brass. There is oxidation in places on the setting. We did not scrub at the oxidation or try to buff it out, we only polished by hand.
We see a maiden near a stone building with trees hanging over the building. There is no detail on the face of the maiden, just the outline of her head and body with detail work on the dress. The cameo measures 1 5/8" L X 1 1/4" W. The shell is remarkably thin and translucent when held up to the light. There are no chips, cracks or flakes to the shell carving.
The brooch is missing its pin hardware. We see the earlier pin latch on one side but there is no pin or "C" catch closure which this pin would have had. We can easily date this to 1870 or earlier. This repair can be done by your and this can lovely brooch can be enjoyed again. A bale could also be added to this piece if you wish to wear as a necklace. We think there is faint initials on the base of the setting but it is difficult to make them out from age and wear.
This is a gorgeous early scenic cameo that needs a little TLC to be magnificent again.
