1896 Elementary Principles of Carpentry by Tregold Illustrated Architectural Drawings Fold Outs
This Antique Carpentry Book might be one of my favorites on the subject. It has the best architectural drawings from England, Italy and Russia and in my opinion is worth a rebind if you are collector or lover of building. The engravings are incredible and if I didn't like the book so much I would suggest framing them for an industrial space but, this antique reference book on building, carpentry is complete and ready to be enjoyed.
The full title reads, "ELEMENTARY PRINCIPLES OF CARPENTRY; A Treatise on the Pressure and Equilibrium of Timber Framing, the Resistance of Timber, and the Construction of Floors, Centres, Bridges, Roofs, etc.; with Practical Rules and Examples, and numerous Tables of the Scantlings of Timber for different purposes, the Specific Gravities of Materials etc. to which is added an essay on the nature and properties of timber, including the methods of seasoning, and the causes and prevention of decay, with descriptions of the kinds of wood used in building." By Thomas Tregold, C.E. with an appendix of Various Roofs of Iron and Stone.
Published in London by Crosby, Lockwood and Co, 1886 this revised edition is the 7th edition of this antique book.
The book has brown boards with black incised trim on cover and gold/gilt title on spine. The book has 323 over-sized pages including the index and measures 11 3/8"H X 9 3/8"W.
This carpentry book is profusely illustrated with hundreds of woodcuts and 61 engravings of which many are fold-outs. We tried to show as many as we could in our photos. The engravings are superb and if I didn't like the book so much, they would make incredible prints to frame especially for an industrial space. The architectural drawings show locations in England, Italy and Russia and may be others I am not aware of.
Book Condition Fair to Good. Front hinge Cracked and spine is away almost completely away from cover but book remains tight in binding. No missing pages. A few chipped end pages. Light and even tanning throughout. No odor, rips, tears or intentional stains. Corners bumped. A book that a builder or carpenter will enjoy, and an architect or lover of old things will truly appreciate.
