This is a piece worthy of a Victorian chatelaine collection. The brooch is crafted entirely of sterling silver with a gorgeous repousse design highlight the whales facial features ie; rose is the eye, snapping tulip is the mouth
It was completely black (see last 2 photos). I normally do not polish any antique silver but made an exception here because I did not want to miss any makers marks so I did a light hand polishing. The last 2 photos are what it looked like before the hand polishing straight from the jewelry box.
The whale/brooch portion measures 3 1/2 wide from back fin to mouth, it stands 1" at it's widest point on the brooch portion(not including the length of the chains). The total length from top of brooch to end of charm/chain is 6 1/4". There are 4 chatelaine chains attached to the brooch portion. One chain on the very left toward the tail is missing. A chain can be added here very easily. The body of the whale is hollow we see a few pin mark dings on the back but nothing major for a piece of this age.
In addition to the chatelaine brooch you will receive the large sterling silver ram horn whistle by Whiting. The whistle measures 1 1/2" X 1 3/4" and it works. It is signed as shown in photos.
Both pieces have been safely tested to be sterling silver. The total gram weight of both pieces is 41.6g.
The pin on the brooch appears to be original and has a bend or wave to it. It fastens fine and can probably be straightened. We love this unusual piece and hope it finds a good home.
