A rare find for the antique book collector. 1819 Lord Byron, Mazeppa, A Poem. Published in London by John Murray. This is a First Edition but we are uncertain which printing as it does not contain a colophon in this edition.
The book measures 8 1/2" X 5 3/8". Half calf and cloth hard boards with gilt title on spine. Spine is complete but peeling. Boards are tanned, scuffed and leather shows signs of wear. All pages in binding but last 2 blank pages (70-72) are loose. Hinge cracked. Age spots, tanning throughout. Still easily read. Starts with Title Page, followed immediately by one page (back and front) of advertisements with B2 beneath the print on the lower right side of page. Followed immediately with Mazeppa on first page (unnumbered). Book ends with "Fragment" Byron's early Vampire story included in this volume by Murray without Byron's consent (pages 57 to 69). Then there is one blank page and heavy end page before back board. There is no colophon.
A wonderful chance to own a highly collectible piece. We have reduced the price to coincide with the condition. We will be adding another Byron book "Hebrew Melodies" shortly in the same boards.
