This is an early 19th century earthenware tin glaze jug with bird decoration. The colors are vivid and it displays well. From southern Italy c1800.
This is one of two bird decorated earthenware jugs in our shop we will post a link to other later in the listing.
The jug stands 8 3/4" in height, measures 4 3/4" across the bottom and measures 20" around the widest part of the bulbous body. There is a jagged chip at the rim (see photos) and loss of glaze around the inside top of rim. Otherwise there are no flakes, chips or cracks to the body or base. There is loss of glaze size of a thumb print on the lower part of the handle. It does hold liquid without leaking.
The decoration is superb with bird and ferns done in colors of yellow, blue, green and black/brown. If you are a collector of earthenware or other early decorated pottery this will not disappoint.
