c1900 Gold Plated Mycenaean Death Mask of Agamemnon Ancient Greek Reproduction
A great find for the Greek historical collector. This antique c1900 gold plated Mycenaean Death Mask is a reproduction of the famed Mask of Agamemnon from mid 16th century BCE. The original mask was believed to be found in 1876.
This death mask is constructed of solid copper with a heavy 10k gold plating. We can date it back to as far as 1900 but it could be older. The mounting board is suggestive of the early 1900s but the reproduction of the mask could be earlier. We acquired this from a local estate where the late owner lived her child hood years in western Europe around Bulgaria. This piece was given to her by her great grandparents. It is in Very Good estate condition.
We carefully removed the mask from the mounting board to carefully test the metal and photographed the back side for you. The patina on the back is normal and we see a few areas where the mask has been carefully repaired with old solder on the back. This mask was found mounted on the shield type board. The mounting board measures 13" tall by 12 1/2" wide and the mask measures 9 3/4" tall X 10 1/4" wide. Overall nice condition and a great antique piece for display.
The product was exactly as represented. It arrived in perfect condition.
Oddly, it appeared in my email the day after I thought it would be perfect to have a replica of Agamemnon’s death mask, to tribute to the Ancient Mediterranean civilizations theme of my bathroom.
