A wonderful example of a late Victorian Cameo Brooch. This piece was carved from a pink conch shell and set in sterling silver. It measures 1 1/8" and the cameo measures 7/8".
The setting is done in an ornate wire filigree with ball decorations on the ends of the four corners. It is not marked sterling but has been safely tested to be so. We did not polish with cleaner only wiped down, as we like the natural patina on the silver. The cameo has an early "C" catch closure which extends slightly beyond the brooch. We are dating this to 1880 to1900. There is a bend or wave in the pin from age and use. It works fine and closes securely.
The carving is free of any chips, cracks or flakes and has wonderful petal pink color with cream on the figure of a Roman person possibly a God or Goddess.
