1859 Bible Old New Testaments bookplate from Rev Clifford S Arms to Mary A Carpenter, Ridgebury, NY
An antique leather Bible containing both the Old and New Testaments published by The American Bible Society, NY NY in 1859. We picked this Bible up, even with the noticeable wear to the cover because it had a great hand written bookplate from Rev Clifford S Arms to Mary A Carpenter, Ridgebury, NY (near Hudson, NY). We thought this might be a great find for the genealogy enthusiasts. This book is also a nice handy hymnal size measuring 5 5/8" H X 3 1/2"W and 1 3/4" D.
The bible has beautiful gilt end pages. The book plate reads "Presented to Miss Mary A. Carpenter, as a reward for having perfectly committed to memory the whole of the Catechism of the Westminister Assembly of Divines and recited it at one time. " It is from "Rev. Clifford S. Arms, ,Ridgebury, Feb 3, 1860"
It appears from research that Rev. Arms passed away at age 66 in 1863. This church was located somewhere near Hudson NY. We did not go too much further with research on Mary A. Carpenter but you have an area to start with.
The bible's leather cover is worn with heavy rubbing on the edges. The brass hinges remains on front and back cover but the fold over lock is missing. The Bible has 963 pages. There is tanning and discoloration throughout but it can still be read. There is a dark stain on the last 20 pages of the book, see photos. The text can still be read. We see no missing or loose pages.
We are including shipping on this piece for our USA customers.
