A superb piece of antique Americana Folk Art. This 19th Century checkerboard is beautifully crafted of hard woods (mahogany and walnute) and will make a wonderful display when not in use.
This primitive game board measures 16.25" X 16.25" with a depth of 1.25" not including the under drawer. The checker playing area measures 12.75" square. There is a slide out draw at the base used to hold checkers which measures 10.75" X 3" with a 1.75" depth. The checkers shown are not original to the era of the board and we note some checkers are missing. They were included with the board when we acquired it and we will include them with your purchase. The board is heavy and dense as you would expect from being crafted of hard woods. It weighs a little over 6 pounds unboxed.
We are uncertain if it was part of a table top at one time or just a stand alone game board. It does balance fine with the drawer on the bottom. The inlay work is nicely done and the rest of the board is put together with finishing nails and early smaller hand forged nails (not square nails - they are not as large as square nails but the nail heads are not uniform in shape and size).
