One of the most stunning Victorian Era frames we have seen a while. This deep walnut frame has several layers of trim including gilt, gesso and leopard spots painted on gilt. It also has a bit of an interesting story with a watercolor painting of a little girl by a fountain. The frame is in Very Good Condition for it's age with minimal wear seen to the gesso in one spot (see last photo).
The frame is deep with a 2 1/4" depth. It measures 18" X 16" with the glass portion measuring 8 1/2" by 7". The matte is water stained but the watercolor painting is not. We do not see a signature. This piece was acquired in Florida and the history we obtained was that little girl was Irma Davis - although we are not certain of the name or spelling (it could be Erma Davis, or Erma Davies etc) and she had something important to do with the San Francisco Philharmonic. I spent an hour or so trying to research her but could not find anything to verify.
The glass is all good. The frame shows light wear on a section of the gesso but this is minimal for a frame of this age. The leopard painted gilt on the frame interior is stunning. One of the nicest frames we have seen in quite a while and the painting is darling. The matte can easily be removed and replaced. We did not want to make any changes to the condition we acquired it in.
