1940s collectible desktop thermometer produced for Bay City Boats Inc, Bay City Michigan. This little thermometer comes from a historically important ship builder Harry J. Defoe. Defoe is well known for his large shipyard that had government military contracts on large vessels during WWII. Bay City Boats Inc was a shoot of project of his that became extremely successful for pre-fabricated wooden boats. They made smaller kit boats including cruisers and runabouts which are now highly collectible, as collectible as Chris Craft. These kits were produced from the beginning of the 20th century when he started building patterns until the late 1950s.
This tin thermometer is in it's original condition. The tin body shows oxidation where there was once a gold tone finish. No dings, dents or rot on the body or base just oxidized metal. The glass bezel is free of any damage and the thermometer is working perfectly. Along the inside edge which was too difficult to photograph we can see the maker of this thermometer as Shaw & Barton of Coshocton, OH. We can safely date this to the 1940s.
The thermometer stands 4" tall and 4 3/4" long with a 2" depth at the base. A great nautical or maritime collectible and a nice piece if you are into Bay City Michigan history.
