19th Cent European Tin Glaze Earthenware Charger Antique Blue and White

$2,800.00 $1,995.00

12.25" / Blue / Stoneware

An early 19th Century Blue and White Tin Glaze Earthenware Charger in wonderful original condition.  This is a superb piece of for the collector.

The charger measures 12 1/8" across and stands approximately 1 1/2". This piece is of European origin and we it find it extremely interesting because it does not fit the identification of any specific region easily. The large border decoration is indicative of Spain but this piece has a glazed back which you might see on a piece of early Faience. The floral at the center is too heavy to be English or French and we have not seen any Delft or Netherlands earthenware close to that design. My instincts tell me that the artist was of Spanish decent but the plate was made elsewhere in Europe.

The charger shows wear to the slip glaze only at the rim. There are no chips, cracks, flakes or repairs to the stoneware. The blue glaze is bright and clean the milky white glaze shows normal age discoloration . There are several pottery bubbles marks (where the glaze bubbles pops) on the back side. This is from the firing process and again normal. This is probably one of the best pieces of blue and white pottery that has ever come through our shop.

Over the next few weeks we will selling the rest of this important, early collection of earthenware. There are incredible pieces from the 18th-19th centuries, including tin glazed apothecary jars, jugs, large bowls and more. This was part of the collection. Some pieces of the collection were labeled and dated as it was acquired. We were told that many of these pieces have been on loan to various museum throughout their lifetime and passed on through several generations of the same family.
