This is an antique, framed and matted colored engraving from the book "Grecian remains in Italy : a description of Cyclopian walls, and of Roman antiquities, with topographical and picturesque views of ancient Latium" by J.J. Middleton. The engraver and publisher is John Orme.
This book was published in sections over a period of several years between 1805 and 1819. We did not remove the engraving from the frame. Someone prior to us removed the backing, we left it as we found it.
The framers tag on the back dates to 1849. This is a wonderful early piece for the collector. The engraving shows a gorgeous view of the Cyclopian Tower, Cyclopian Wall, and Town Gate leading to Giuliano.
The piece framed measures 20" long by 14 1/8" wide with a 3/4" depth on the frame. The engraving is matted and the portion of the engraving that we can see is 12" X 15 3/4" but we suspect the engraving is slightly larger. We see some light spotting as you would expect of a piece this age but overall, fairly remarkable for a piece that is roughly 200 year old. The wood frame has a gold finish that is fairly evenly faded from time with an inner accent color of black. There is mild age wear to the frame seen at the edges. Again for its age remarkable.
